My experience
The WAVAC LCR-X2 is a reference-level phono stage that uses an LCR (inductor-capacitor-resistor) RIAA equalization network, a topology prized for its accuracy and natural tonal balance. In reviews, it is praised for delivering an exceptionally smooth, organic, and unforced vinyl presentation, with a very low noise floor for a tube design.
Sonically, it is described as highly refined and musical, with excellent midrange realism, deep soundstage layering, and a sense of continuous flow that avoids the “etched” character of many active EQ phono stages. Bass is typically noted as full, controlled, and naturally textured rather than overly tight or analytical.
The LCR-X2 is also considered extremely transparent, scaling strongly with cartridge quality and system resolution. However, it is expensive, tube-dependent, and requires careful matching, with limited flexibility compared to modern DSP-based phono stages.
Overall, it is regarded as an endgame analog phono stage focused on natural timbre and realism over convenience or versatility.
